Simpson rues late heartbreak

Manager Paul Simpson admitted Shrewsbury Town's last-gasp play-off final defeat had been a bitter pill to swallow.

Saturday's Wembley encounter looked to be heading into extra-time before Simeon Jackson popped up with a 90th minute winner for Gillingham.

"I don't think there is every an easy way to lose a game, but for them to score so late on was very hard," said Simpson.

"To lose it in the way that we did from a set-piece was also very disappointing as we've worked hard to stop conceding from them.

"We have to get on with it, pick ourselves up and get ready to go again.

"It makes it a horrible journey home and I'm not looking forward to it and it makes it a horrible next few weeks.

"The thing I will say is that I have been proud of the players over the whole of the season, proud of the effort that they've put in today and it has been a pleasure to work with them.

"Unfortunately we've come a little bit short today, a little bit short over the 46 games this season and we've now got to look at it all."
