Simpson handed Shrews job
12 Mar 2008 - 12:13:06
Former Preston North End and Carlisle United boss Paul Simpson has been confirmed as the new manager of Shrewsbury Town.
Simpson takes over at the League Two club following the recent sacking of Gary Peters, with the Shrews marooned in mid-table after reaching the play-off final last season.
Forty-one-year-old Simpson has been out of work since being axed by the Lilywhites last November, having been in charge at Deepdale for around 18 months.
He previously spent three years at the helm at Carlisle, having begun his managerial career with 12 months in charge of Rochdale.
Town chairman Roland Wycherley told the club's official website: "I am delighted to have attracted a manager of Paul's calibre to the club.
"We were extremely pleased with the quality of the applications for the post and it was a very difficult decision to make. We believe we have appointed the man to take the club forward."
