Shrewsbury Town boss Gary Peters has signed the Australian-born teenager James Meredith after the defender impressed while on trial at the New Meadow last week.
The 19-year-old has penned a deal that will keep him with the Shrews until the end of next season.
Meredith came through the youth team ranks at Derby County but failed to break in to the first team at Pride Park and was loaned out to Cambridge United and Chesterfield last season.
Peters told Town's official website: "He was released by Derby at the end of last season and he wanted to go straight out and play games so went out to play for Sligo.
"He got stronger during that time and that six months have really brought him on. He's quick, aggressive, decent in the air and has an excellent left foot.
"He's trained with us a bit and played in the reserve game last week. I think I made my mind up after 20 minutes of the game that we needed to sign him."
