Shrewsbury Town boss Paul Simpson is hopeful that midfield recruit Paul Murray will help the club challenge for promotion next season.
The 31-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Shrews, having recently left cash-strapped SPL side Gretna.
Murray had earlier enjoyed spells with Carlisle United, QPR and Oldham Athletic.
Simpson told the Shropshire Star: "Paul is an excellent player and had a really good season in difficult times for his club.
"He is exactly the type of character we are looking for. He has got experience, he's a leader and the type to dig you out of a situation if things aren't going well.
"There were clubs from a higher level after him and when I first spoke to him, he said he didn't want to drop any lower than League One.
"But he saw the ground and wants to help us achieve what everybody wants."
Former Carlisle United trainee Stephen Hindmarch has also moved to the New Meadow, agreeing a 12-month contract.
