Esson stays with Town

Goalkeeper Ryan Esson has decided to stay with Shrewsbury Town for the time being and battle for his place with the League Two outfit.

The 27-year-old suffered an injury-hit campaign with Town following his arrival from Aberdeen a year ago, but has opted not to return to Scotland and stay and battle Glyn Garner for a starting spot with the Shrews.

Manager Gary Peters had earlier confirmed that Esson could leave on a free transfer if he wanted to, telling the Shropshire Star: "We have said we would not stand in Ryan's way by putting a fee on his head.

"Ryan had an unfortunate season with injuries and, because of that, he is not much of a sellable commodity.

"If he'd come down from Aberdeen and had a really good season it would have been a very different story."
