Turner rues penalty award

Shrewsbury manager Graham Turner felt aggrieved by the decision to award a late penalty which cost his side victory in the 2-2 draw at home to fellow promotion contenders and neighbours Port Vale. Referee Phil Gibbs pointed to the spot seven minutes from time after Mat Sadler had brought down Tom Pope, leaving Vale striker Marc Richards to fire home his second of the night to salvage a share of the spoils. "Given the decision that was made it's very, very frustrating," said Turner. "We've just had the opportunity to have a look at it on DVD and in slow motion and it was never a penalty. "For a start we don't think the referee had a good view of it. He's had to look around bodies. "Mat Sadler was in front of the lad (Pope) and basically in control. I think the linesman has said to one of the players that in his view it wasn't a penalty, so we're aggrieved by it and it's another couple of points dropped at home." He continued: "It was a gritty performance and we played some decent stuff on the odd occasion. We worked hard for it, and having taken the lead I could see the three points coming, but what has cost us we think is that we've been on the wrong end of a decision."
