Simpson rues misfiring Shrewsbury
Chris Dagnall's superb 73rd-minute finish rescued a draw for Rochdale after ex-Dale hit-man Grant Holt scored early in the second half.
The result leaves the pre-season title favourites with just one win from the previous 11 games, but just a point outside the play-offs.
"It's deja-vu," said Simpson. "It was one of our best home performances for a while, but if you don't take your chances, you're going to get punished.
"Once again we're going home disappointed. We're running out of games. If we'd have been as clinical as teams are against us then we'd be fine."
