Shrews hamstrung by duo's absence

Shrewsbury will again be without Akwasi Asante and Dave Winfield for the visit of Bolton in the Capital One Cup first round.

On-loan striker Asante missed Saturday's goalless draw with MK Dons due to the hamstring injury picked up during an entertaining 3-3 pre-season friendly draw against the Trotters.

It had been hoped he would be in contention to return for Saturday's Sky Bet League One trip to Leyton Orient but that now also appears unlikely.

Centre-back Winfield, meanwhile, faces up to a month on the sidelines with a hamstring injury of his own.

Midfielder Chris Eagles is a major doubt for Bolton.

The winger limped off just after the hour mark in a 1-1 draw with former club Burnley on Saturday and the Trotters will monitor his progress prior to kick-off.

Boss Dougie Freedman has rejected the notion he will use the opportunity to rotate his squad, insisting he will instead name the strongest possible XI.

However, Wanderers' trio of long-term knee injury victims - Stuart Holden, Joe Riley and Mark Davies - are still some way off returning to action.
