Shrewsbury sack Simpson

Shrewsbury have terminated the contract of manager Paul Simpson with immediate effect.

The decision comes on the eve of the club's penultimate game of the season against Morecambe. The 43-year-old was appointed as Town's manager in March 2008 and took them to the League Two play-off final last season, only for them to suffer a 1-0 defeat to Gillingham. They have failed to mount a serious challenge for the play-offs this time around, though, and are currently six points adrift of the top-six with two games remaining.

"It is obviously a big wrench to be leaving Shrewsbury Town but I am very proud to have managed the club and to have led them out at Wembley in a play-off final," Simpson said.

"I would like to offer my sincere thanks to all of my staff and players for their professionalism throughout my time at the club.

"Finally I would like to thank the fans for their support and to wish everyone connected with the club success in the future."
