Shrews up to second

Shrewsbury moved into second place in the table but their 2-0 win over Torquay was less than convincing.

The Shrews took the lead after six minutes when James Collins sent Lionel Ainsworth away on the right wing and when the tricky winger crossed low into the box, Collins neatly tucked it away from 12 yards.

Marvin Morgan, twice, and Mark Wright scorned good chances to increase the lead against a side that thrashed Shrewsbury 5-0 only last March and then beat them in the play offs.

As Torquay came back into the game, Ben Smith saved with his legs as Billy Bodin raced clear.

Collins hit the bar on 48 minutes but a minute later punished a poor clearance by goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik to drive the ball low inside the far post from 15 yards.

United used all their subs early in the second half in an all-out effort to salvage a point, but their misery was complete when striker Rene Howe collected a second yellow card in stoppage time for pushing Reuben Hazell.
