Shrewsbury have snapped up Scunthorpe defender Niall Canavan on loan until the end of the season. Town boss Graham Turner revealed earlier this week he was keen to bolster his ranks ahead of Thursday`s final loan deadline, and he has already done just that. The versatile Canavan, 19, progressed through the youth ranks at Glanford Park before penning a professional contract in 2009. To date, he has made 20 appearances for the Iron`s first team, including 10 this season. The youngster told Town`s official website: "I`ve come here with the aim of playing games so it`s up to me to show what I can do and get a place in the team." Turner added: "He`s a big strong lad, he`s a powerful player, has a really good left foot and defends really well. We are a bit short in the left side of defence with only Shane Cansdell-Sherriff and Mat Sadler so Niall will give us another option." However, Canavan will be unavailable for this weekend`s trip to Bradford having been drafted into the Republic of Ireland`s Under-21 squad on Tuesday afternoon.
