Shrews claim win in five-goal thriller

Shrewsbury were good value for their fifth win in six league games as they held on for a 3-2 success in a thriller against fellow high flyers Port Vale.

Marvin Morgan curled in the opener with a brilliant individual effort from 15 yards after leaving Vale defenders Gareth Owen and Mike Green for dead in the third minute.

And winger Mark Wright doubled their advantage inside the opening 15 minutes by placing a cool finish beyond Chris Martin after racing clear from Joe Jacobson's precise pass.

Vale raced back into contention before the break when Ben Williamson lobbed his first goal for the club over advancing goalkeeper Ben Smith after latching onto a pass from Adam Yates.

But Vale centre-back John McCombe was forced off in the 49th minute and Shrewsbury extended their lead a minute later when Lionel Ainsworth hammered home a low cross from Wright.

Vale pulled a goal back nine minutes from time when Williamson headed his second from six yards after good work by Tom Pope, but the visitors held firm in the tense closing stages.
