"I've got a point to make here. I've got to keep my place and keep playing well," Neal told BBC Radio Shropshire.
"I'm positive, like the rest of the team, and the more games I play, the more confident I'll become."
Smith started the season as manager Graham Turner's first-choice, but had to come off during the first half of Town's second league game of the season, at Macclesfield.
Neal has started all six Shrewsbury games since then, keeping three clean sheets.
Smith returned to the bench for the last match at Gillingham, as Shrewsbury lost for the first time in League Two this season and were knocked off the top of the table.
"We had to lose sometime," Neal added, "and we've got to be really positive going into the next game - as I have."
