Shrews march past Silkmen

Shrewsbury moved into the top three with a 3-1 win over struggling Macclesfield which extended the hosts' winless streak to 18 league games.

James Collins scored a brace for the promotion-chasing Shrews while Mark Wright netted the other, with Arnaud Mendy giving the Silkmen hope amid a late exchange of goals.

Shrews went close in the 29th minute when centre-back Ian Sharps headed wide at the far post from an inswinging corner.

But the visitors took the lead soon after when top scorer Collins was left unmarked to run at Ben Futcher and, despite being pulled back, found the far corner with a neat 15-yard finish.

Town nearly added another after 40 minutes but Sharps headed wide at the near post this time, before Macc striker Colin Daniel tried his luck from 25 yards at the other end only to see his attempt fly narrowly wide.

Wright tested Richard O'Donnell with a dipping 20-yard chip which the Macc goalkeeper tipped over the bar in the 54th minute.

But he made no mistake seven minutes from time when Jermaine Grandison curled an inch-perfect ball to the far corner for him to slide home.

Seconds later Mendy slotted a neat volley to give the home side a lifeline, although it was snatched back in the 86th minute when Collins cut through the hosts' defence and picked out the far corner.
