Accrington sunk by Shrews at home

The Shrews took the lead after 18 minutes when right-back Dean Winnard tugged Dave Hibbert's shirt in the area and Steve Leslie sent Alan Martin the wrong way from the penalty spot. Nathan Elder had a chance to double the advantage after 35 minutes but scuffed his shot when one-on-one with Martin. Stanley offered little up front until just after the break when Kelvin Langmead cleared Sean McConville's strike off the line, but the Shrews went straight up the other end and Leslie's corner was headed home by defender Langmead at the far post in the 50th minute. Hibbert could have added a third but Martin denied him before Stanley striker Michael Symes, against his former club, went on a run and rifled the ball into the top of the net after 67 minutes to give the Reds hope. Accrington suddenly upped the tempo with Bobby Grant hitting the post for the Reds in a lively finale. But the Shrews broke eight minutes from time, keeper Martin came out and Dave Hibbert got the final touch to poke the ball home for his fourth goal of the season.
