Will the loan window open doors for Wednesday?
Owls squad in need of a boost
On Monday night the transfer window closed quietly at Hillsborough. Thankfully none of the Owls first team regulars jumped out of the window as rumours circulating regarding the futures of Chris Kirkland and Michail Antonio proved to be unfounded.
On the other side of the coin there was a fair amount of disappointment that no new faces came into the club. Wednesday did complete the loan signing of young West Ham full-back Jordan Spence prior to last weekends draw at Middlesbrough but that was a short-term emergency loan move borne out of necessity due to the injury to Lewis Buxton.
Throughout the summer the talk was of the need for a proven goal scorer with the Chairman even stating that this was a key priority. The Owls remain without a player with the experience of putting the ball in the back of the net on a regular basis at Championship level and it has shown in the 6 matches so far this season.
There are likely to be plenty of good options still available - as Premier League clubs finalise their squads some quality will be deemed surplus to requirements but Wednesday will need to act quickly to convince any prospective targets that a move to Hillsborough is the right one with the Owls having got off to a slow start.
Another concern arising from the Owls performances so far has been the lack of creativity and attacking influence from central midfield. Wednesday are not short of midfielders but many are defensive minded or perhaps not ready to play a lead role in the team at this stage.
The squad lacks a central player who is a genuine goal threat or has an eye for a killer pass. Recent talk has been of the constraints regarding the budget as it is suggested that the club are losing around £5M per year so whether funds will be made available for a number of loan players remains to be seen. Wednesday fans in general will be hoping to see an addition or two to the squad to inject some attacking energy and positivity into the team ahead of their next fixture against Yeovil on September 14th.
