    Wilkinson named new Owls chief

    17 May 2010 - 15:40:59

Howard Wilkinson has been appointed the new interim chairman of Sheffield Wednesday following the resignation of Lee Strafford.

Wilkinson, a former Owls player and manager who was appointed technical advisor to the board back in January, has agreed to step into the breach following Strafford's decision to walk away.

"I would like to thank Lee for all his work over the past 18 months," he told the club's official website.

"He's a true fan of Sheffield Wednesday and his efforts towards rebuilding this club should not be forgotten.

"My focus now is on working with (manager) Alan Irvine to build a strong team and one that is capable of achieving promotion back to the Championship as soon as possible.

"It has been a tough few weeks for everybody who cares about Sheffield Wednesday but, by working together, we must try to ensure that we're able to look forward to a brighter season ahead."

Strafford, who became chairman in January 2009, has decided to step down following the club's relegation to League One.

"I'm proud of what we have achieved in terms of completely revitalising all of the off-field activities of the club," he said in a statement.

"It's also a disappointment that the investment process has not at this point resulted in a positive outcome, having clearly been impacted by the threat of and ultimate relegation.

"Having said that, it's my view that the club can progress on its own two feet without outside investment.

"For me, Sheffield Wednesday can continue to grow without external investment until such time as it needs to consolidate its position back in the Premier League."
