Owls snap up Maguire
Sheffield Wednesday have completed yet another signing ahead of their return to the Championship by acquiring the services of Derby County forward Chris Maguire.
Maguire has signed a 3-year deal at Hillsborough, making the move from the Rams for an undisclosed fee.
The 23-year-old began his career in his native Scotland with SPL side Aberdeen for whom he made over 100 appearances between 2005 and 2011. He moved to Derby in the summer of 2011 for £400,000 but failed to make the impact that he was hoping to at Pride Park. Maguire made just 8 appearances for the Rams last season, scoring 2 goals. Towards the end of the campaign he made a loan switch to Championship strugglers Portsmouth, scoring 3 times in 11 games for Pompey.
At International level Maguire scored an impressive 6 goals in 11 appearances for the Scotland under 21’s team and he made his debut for the senior team last year.
The diminutive front man is best utilised playing just off a main striker and has the ability to create goals as well as score them.
Maguire’s league debut for the Owls could come against his former club as Wednesday travel to Pride Park of the opening day of the 2012/13 league season.
The Owls released 6 players at the end of last season and are making good progress in shaping a squad that manager Dave Jones feels will be able to compete in the Championship. Maguire joins new signings Anthony Gardner, Chris Kirkland, Joe Mattock and Kieran Lee at Hillsborough with the expectancy of more to come in the build up to the new season.
