Sturrock hoping for fitness boost

Sheffield Wednesday boss Paul Sturrock hopes to have John Hills and Richard Wood back to bolster his struggling defence ahead of the South Yorkshire derby against Barnsley.

Hills has not played since August because of a calf injury, while a groin problem has kept Wood on the sidelines since February.

Both are now closing in on full fitness and Sturrock believes the visit of Barnsley after the international break is a realistic target for them.

"Hopefully, Hills and Wood will be champing at the bit for the Barnsley game," he told the Sheffield Star.

"The squad as a whole should be healthier by then, and there are two reserve games during which some players can be given an outing."
