Sordell sparks Charlton comeback
Charlton inched towards safety in the Sky Bet Championship after a Marvin Sordell hat-trick saw them recover from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Sheffield Wednesday.
It represented a complete turnaround at Hillsborough, where Wednesday were two goals to the good after just eight minutes.
Atdhe Nuhiu put the Owls ahead in the third minute before Chris Maguire doubled the hosts' lead five minutes later.
However, Sordell pulled one back just two minutes later and although the Owls had been the better side in the first half against a Charlton team who lacked confidence and strength, the striker scored a second three minutes before the break.
Sordell completed his hat-trick in the 63rd minute with a cool finish after getting between two defenders on the break as the urgency of their predicament propelled them forward against a Wednesday side with little to play for.
Charlton entered the match outside the relegation zone on goal difference alone, three goals to the good ahead of Blackpool.
However, their task was made even more difficult in the third minute when Nuhiu volleyed home from a tight angle after Miguel Llera played the ball to him.
Wednesday had little to play for whereas avoiding defeat was imperative for Charlton, but the Addicks found themselves two goals down after eight minutes.
Nuhiu marauded down the right and sent a cross-field ball which found Maguire in the penalty area, and although he lost his footing, the striker managed to recover and curl the ball home.
However, the visitors pulled one back almost immediately, Sordell capitalising on Wednesday indecision and sliding the ball past goalkeeper Chris Kirkland into the bottom corner.
Nuhiu twice poked inches wide before the ground rose as one to give a standing ovation to dying Sheffield Wednesday fan Johnny Eales, whose son's appeal for the crowd to mark his father's visit to Hillsborough went viral.
Charlton's defence was porous, Wednesday cutting through at will with the Addicks clearly lacking confidence and the physicality required for a relegation fight.
Sordell was flagged offside after the visitors worked an opening but the match had gone flat after the early excitement.
However, from nowhere, Charlton equalised three minutes before the break when Sordell shot across Kirkland to place the ball coolly in the bottom left-hand corner after being played in by Callum Harriott with the Owls ball-watching.
Wednesday only had themselves to blame after being firmly in control and it meant the Addicks had hauled themselves out of the drop zone.
Sordell bobbled a long-range shot wide before forcing Kirkland down quickly to block.
However, Sordell completed his hat-trick when he was played in from halfway, getting between two defenders and calmly slotting the ball past the keeper into the corner.
Jordan Cousins' goalbound shot was blocked as the Addicks attacked and Harriott continued to cause problems for the Owls defence.
Charlton visibly grew in confidence while the hosts were guilty of some sloppy play, the Addicks claiming three vital points.
