Premier League side can't stop Owls unbeaten run

Wednesday progress in League Cup

Sheffield Wednesday’s unbeaten start to the new season continued on Tuesday evening thanks to 1-0 win against Premier League side Fulham in the Capital One Cup at Hillsborough.

The Owls remain unbeaten since Dave Jones took over as manager back at the beginning of March and they fully deserved to progress to the 3rd round.

Like the Owls, Fulham came into the game in good form having enjoyed a thumping 5-0 win over Norwich on the opening day and they only narrowly missed out on a point at Old Trafford at the weekend.

Both managers made a number of changes to their sides and the first half produced few chances at either end although Michail Antonio was providing an attacking threat for the home side. The visitors were rather fortunate to still have 11 men at the break as Steve Sidwell came close to receiving a second caution having been booked early on.

The match came to life early in the second half when Owls striker Chris Maguire was brought down inside the penalty area. Last season’s top scorer Gary Madine calmly converted the spot kick to give the home side the initiative.

Fulham thought they had grabbed an equaliser just after the hour mark when tall defender Brede Hangeland found the net but they were denied by a linesman’s flag. In truth the visitors offered very little in the way of getting back on level terms and they were unable to test Bywater in the Owls goal throughout.

Indeed it was Wednesday who came closest to adding to the scoring when Nejc Pecnik’s well placed strike was tipped onto the crossbar. The Owls were able to comfortably see out the closing stages of the game as Fulham became increasingly frustrated and the Hillsborough faithful went home happy was again with their team safely into the draw for the 3rd round of the League Cup.
