Owls suffers Jeffers blow

Sheffield Wednesday's excellent 4-2 victory at Stoke City came at a price, with Owls striker Francis Jeffers sustaining a broken ankle.

The summer signing was stretchered off after a tackle from Potters defender Ryan Shawcross and faces a lengthy spell out of action as a consequence.

Manager Brian Laws told the club's official website: "I would like to have been positive about the performance and the result, but I am dejected.

"I've lost a quality player with a broken ankle and the icing has been taken off the cake. Francis Jeffers is a genuine lad who has real quality and has worked his socks off.

"I thought we were supposed to be cutting out these tackles from behind and I thought the referee handled the game well, but he made a wrong decision.

"I am not saying the player has gone out to do that deliberately, but when you see a lad who has gone down with a broken ankle as a result, it is tough to take."
