Sheffield Wednesday have received a blow with the news that captain Richard Wood is unlikely to play again until the new year.

Wood, 22, was stretchered off in the home defeat by Scunthorpe United on October 23 with a shoulder injury and an operation is required to discover the full extent of the problem.

The injury-plagued defender missed most of last season with successive groin and foot injuries.

Meanwhile, Owls boss Brian Laws has failed in a bid to extend Sunderland midfielder Graham Kavanagh's loan spell at the club.

Black Cats boss Roy Keane said: "Brian Laws has been ringing me every ten minutes as he wants Kav back, but he is a Sunderland player and as much as we want to help other clubs, we need to help ourselves first.

"I've not brought him back to play in the reserves."
