Irvine still upbeat over survival
19 Apr 2010 - 10:01:40
Alan Irvine still believes Sheffield Wednesday's survival hopes are in their own hands despite dropping two points in Sunday's derby with Sheffield United.
A Lee Williamson equaliser salvaged Sheffield pride for United but left Wednesday deep in relegation trouble as the 125th Steel City derby ended up even at 1-1.
Wednesday led through Darren Potter's 40th minute opened, but Williamson levelled with a second-half free-kick.
The Owls are still deep in relegation danger down in 22nd place in the Championship table.
"It's still to a large extent in our own hands," explained Irvine.
"If we can match or better Crystal Palace's result next week then it goes to the last game and unfortunately that was one of the things I predicted when I first got the job.
"If we can be that bit more clinical up front and stop the goals we have been conceding through bad luck then we will have a chance.
"I wanted to win the game, I was desperate to win the game, I went with a team that I thought could win the game and they nearly did."
