Irvine looks to young guns
Manager Alan Irvine has vowed not to take his eye off Sheffield Wednesday`s young players as he bids to strengthen his squad ahead of next season`s League One campaign.Irvine has told his up-and-coming players to come back in good shape for pre-season training and then try to earn places in the first-team squad. The Scot hopes the likes of striker Nathan Modest and midfielder Liam Palmer, who have experience of training with the full squad, can continue their progress."We are looking to sign some players but we have stressed to the younger lads to come back in good shape and try to prove that they have the desire and determination to show they should be in the first-team group on a regular basis," Irvine told The Star."If I can sign the players that I want, then it may be that the young players' chances are limited. That is why it is vitally important that from the start of pre-season they make a good impression."But they will get some opportunities and then it is up to them to convince me and the staff that they should always be in the group. If they can do that, then fantastic. However, I don`t think we should expect too much from these lads next season."
