Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine has stated that he felt it was right to allow striker Akpo Sodje to leave Hillsborough to join Charlton Athletic until the end of the season.
The 29-year-old was out of contract with the Owls next summer and Irvine felt that it was unlikely that Sodje would be offered fresh terms.
Irvine told The Star: "I don't know if we were going to be able to offer Akpo a new contract or not. He's got himself a contract there subject to him making the relevant number of appearances.
"It would have been very difficult for me to say to him he couldn't go and then have to say later there wasn't a deal for him here.
"We've got Luke Varney, Marcus Tudgay, Francis Jeffers, Leon Clarke and Jermaine Johnson as well. It's an area where we've got strength in depth."
