Irvine: Cup run is important

Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine is delighted his side have been handed a home tie in the Carling Cup first round. The Owls play host to League Two side Bury in the week commencing August 9 and will be looking to improve on last season's poor showing in the competition when they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Port Vale at the second round stage.Irvine is certainly looking for a win to hopefully spark a morale-boosting cup run.He told the club's official website: "I'm pleased we have a home game, that's what every manager wants from a cup draw. This will not be an easy game because none are these days."Bury proved themselves to be a very competitive last season and only narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs. Alan Knill is doing well as a manager and I'm expecting a tough game."Every game we play in the cups will be important because good cup runs boost morale and confidence. Reading showed last season and Barnsley too not so long ago."
