Gilbert out for the season

Sheffield Wednesday defender Peter Gilbert will miss the rest of the season after being told he must undergo an operation on his knee.

Gilbert has been struggling with a torn cartilage in his knee and has been forced to play through the pain barrier as the Owls look to fight off the threat of relegation.

Wednesday have now admitted defeat to the problem and the player will undergo surgery on Thursday in a bid to get him fully fit for the start of next season.

The loss of Gilbert is an added blow bearing in mind fellow defender Richard Wood is still out of action with a groin injury.

"It's a big disappointment with no loans available and Woody out as well," Sturrock told the club's official website.

"We'd be short on the left side if Hillsy was to go down.

"It's only a slight tear that can be mended very quickly. We'll rush him in today and we hope he'll be ready for the start of next season."
