Flu outbreak hits Owls

Sheffield Wednesday have been forced to cancel training as several members of the first-team squad are suffering from a severe outbreak of swine flu.

Darren Purse, Mark Beevers, Sean McAllister, Akpo Sodje and Etienne Esajas were all sidelined for Saturday's trip to Bristol City after complaining of flu-like symptoms, while Tommy Miller played despite feeling ill.

"Due to the situation late last week with several players showing symptoms of a viral infection ahead of the Bristol City match, the first team are not training together on Monday," a club spokesman said.

"This measure has been taken to prevent the possible further spread of infection and players are therefore working on their own fitness programmes ahead of returning to training on Tuesday."
