Striker Leon Clarke has returned to Sheffield Wednesday from Southend United, with doubts surrounding a possible permanent switch to Roots Hall.
The 22-year-old netted eight goals in 16 appearances for the Shrimpers and had seemed set to stay on at Southend to help them challenge for promotion back to the Championship.
Owls boss Brian Laws told the club's official website: "Leon Clarke is back with us. A deal has not gone through at the moment and there is a doubt that it will go through.
"At this moment in time he is still a Sheffield Wednesday player, so he has got to come into the equation. As it stands, he will be available to us against Preston and in the FA Cup at Derby.
"We will have a look at him and see if he is mentally ready for it because he has had a bit of a torrid time since he has been here.
"The fans haven't taken to him and he knows that, so I have to take that into consideration."
