Championship table tussle tightens once more
Owls record vital win as bottom half finds form Sheffield Wednesday secured another important victory at Hillsborough on Tuesday as the battle in the bottom half of the Coca Cola Championship shows no sign of relenting. Wednesday ran out deserved 2-0 winners over Blackpool thanks to goals early in each half from midfielders James O, Connor and Darren Potter. In truth the result rarely seemed in doubt\and although the Owls eased off a little following the second goal the 3 points appeared to be sealed much easier than was the case in the previous two home victories over lowly Peterborough and Plymouth. Despite winning five of their seven fixtures under the leadership of Alan Irvine Wednesday have been unable to put any distance between themselves and the relegation zone as other clubs at the wrong end of the table have also found some form. Reading have recorded three wins in succession, Derby have halted a dismal run with victories against high-flying neighbours Nottingham Forest and Newcastle whilst the likes of Scunthorpe, Coventry, Watford and Ipswich have also managed to pick up key victories of late. Whilst the form of the teams around them means that the Owls have only managed to put two points between themselves and the relegation zone it has meant that a number of other teams have been dragged into contention. Wednesday are only three points behind Bristol City who currently occupy 13th place in the table and so everyone up to Bristol and perhaps a few more above them will be looking worryingly at the new found form of many of the teams near the bottom. The Owls have a weekend off thanks to the continued progress of West Bromwich Albion in the F.A. Cup and they will no doubt be keeping a close eye on the Championship teams that are in action as they prepare to face local rivals Doncaster Rovers at Hillsborough next Tuesday.
