2009/10 owls-mad player reviews: Tommy Spurr

Youngster fails to build on promising previous campaign Having been nurtured through the ranks at Hillsborough there is clearly an extra will from the S6 faithful to see Spurr succeed and having established himself as the first-choice left-back for a number of seasons hopes were high for another season of progression. Spurr certainly can’t be accused of lacking effort and enthusiasm, something a number of his team mates have been labelled with over the course of the past season and the relegation clearly hurt him deeply. Unfortunately his performances during 2009/10 were not reflective of his endeavour and in comparison with an impressive campaign in the previous season he rarely managed to meet the standards he had set for himself. From a very early stage in the season Spurr appeared to be short of form and in turn lacking confidence but a lack of real competition for the left-back spot meant that he continued in the role when perhaps a rest may have done him some good. The 22-year-old was an ever-present in the league and since breaking into the side has played over 150 games in four seasons. Considering the Owls have hardly been solid defensively during this time this stresses and strains of playing in the back four on the youngster both physically and mentally may well have taken their toll and a spell out of the team with a chance to switch-off and recharge the batteries could have helped. Despite what was a disappointing season the defender is still attracting the interest of championship clubs. However, if Spurr could recapture the form he showed in 2008/09 then he could be a useful member of the squad in League One and given the clubs budget restrictions and the extent of squad rebuilding already required it may not be in the Owls best interests to let him go unless they have a suitable replacement lined up. Overall Season Rating: 6/10
