Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock hit out at defender Claude Davis after his error led to Portsmouth's equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Bramall Lane.
Davis failed to deal with a ball into the box with just nine minutes to play and the ensuing mix-up with goalkeeper Paul Gerrard allowed Gary O'Neill to pounce and pull Pompey level.
Warnock told the Yorkshire Post: "You've got to hope he learns from it and hopefully he does.
"He wants to be the ideal centre-half, but if that's the case then he has to learn some of the bread and butter parts of defending first.
"His Beckenbauer act got us into a bit of trouble and one mistake has cost us dearly. He is disappointed, but not half as disappointed as I am.
"Claude should make up Paul's mind for him, because he is able to whack it wherever he wants.
"But you saw what happened and we got punished for it and in conceding a goal like that the result feels more like a defeat.
"I just wish that it had been Chris Lucketti on the ball for the goal. I know where it would have ended up, Row Z."
