Livid Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock thought his side should have been awarded a penalty in the 2-0 defeat at Manchester United when Gabriel Heinze brought down Luton Shelton inside the area.
But Warnock and his players were forced to look on in amazement when referee Mr Styles waved play on after the 68th-minute incident.
Two minutes from time, former Manchester United player Michael Tonge's 25-yard shot hit the crossbar with goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak beaten, but Warnock accepted that the better team on the night won.
He said: "If you're a football player or person or official, if you look at the incident it doesn't need anyone to say it.
"It's difficult to make major decisions like that, so I'm not surprised he didn't give it, but I'd like them to come out and say why.
"Between the referee and the linesman they've got to get decisions like that right.
"They've got to give the decision and then upset Sir Alex. I know people don't like upsetting Sir Alex but they've got to give what's there.
"We did ever so well and we're very disappointed but we were beaten by the better side and two great finishes.
"Another night we might have had one or two ourselves and it would have been different. Other things could have gone our way on another night too."
