Speed slams career claim

Sheffield United midfielder Gary Speed has rejected the 'premature and disrespectful' claims that his playing career is over.

Blades boss Kevin Blackwell revealed on Friday morning that he was planning for life without the veteran midfielder, as Speed could miss the rest of the season after being told he requires back surgery.

The 39-year-old former Wales captain has also been approached by Swindon Town over the managerial vacancy at the League One club.

But Speed has rejected claims that his lengthy playing career is now effectively over.

"I might have the operation and might not be able to continue, but that's up to me to say and decide," he said.

"I would like to get back playing. In my own mind, I have pencilled in March.

"I've read in the papers and seen on the TV that my career is over and that's a bit unfair. I haven't been too pleased with that because it certainly isn't the case.

"I want to contribute to Sheffield United this season and if I can do that come the latter end, then that's great."
