Speed set for Blades top job

Sheffield United have confirmed that they will unveil their new manager on Tuesday, with Gary Speed expected to be named as Kevin Blackwell's successor.

Blades first-team coach Speed is expected to step up to the top job, with Blackwell having been shown the door following a dismal 3-0 home defeat at the hands of QPR.

The defeat followed last weekend's season-opening 1-1 Championship draw with Cardiff City and a 2-0 midweek League Cup exit at the hands of League One Hartlepool United.

Former Wales international midfielder Speed, 40, has been at Bramall Lane since early 2008 and called time on his illustrious playing career at the end of last season.

However, he was named as a substitute for the reverse at Hartlepool just under a week ago.
