Simonsen signs new Stoke contract

Published: 20 Mar 2010 - 11:50:28

Simonsen joined the Blades on an initial one-month loan deal on Friday but, with his contract due to expire in the summer, it was anticipated the move could be made permanent. That possibility appears to have been instantly dismissed, however, by Simonsen's signing of a new one-year contract until the summer of 2011. That will take the 30-year-old into a seventh season at the Britannia Stadium and Pulis is delighted to have secured the services of a goalkeeper, despite making third choice, he rates highly. He said in the Stoke Sentinel: "We have wanted to have three senior goalkeepers on the books for some time and obviously we know all about Steve's qualities. "Steve has done well whenever called upon, often at short notice, and I'm more than happy to have a player of his experience and ability hanging around the place. "With three keepers to hand, we will have the option to send one out next season, but with an instant recall option just in case. "We've taken chances at times with just two goalkeepers this season and you can't keep doing that and getting away with it."
