Sheffield United caught up in Far East match-fixing scandal

Published: 23 Feb 2010 - 01:02:08

Sheffield United have been caught up in a match-fixing scandal in the Far East, less than 12 months after finally ending a bitter row over the legality of Carlos Tevez's role in their relegation from the Barclays Premier League. The Bramall Lane club bought a controlling interest in the Chengdu Blades in 2006 but have been left reeling by their demotion from the Chinese Super League amid allegations of match rigging and gambling. Guangzhou GPC have also been thrown out. Both clubs were implicated in findings that included results being fixed, referees bribed and players paying for places at the national team's training camp and to appear in competitive internationals. It is a major embarrassment to Sheffield United although there is no evidence to implicate anyone from the club with the allegations in China.  Sheffield United 2 Bristol City 0: Henri Camara leads the waySpurs and Sheffield United in talks as Blades battle to secure Walker's releasePreston 2 Sheffield United 1: United loanee Matt James makes his mark
