Stuart McCall has left Sheffield United ahead of a press conference on Tuesday when Bryan Robson and Brian Kidd are expected be unveiled as the Blades' new management team.
McCall was former boss Neil Warnock's number two and was believed to be in the running to take the job on a permanent basis following the club's relegation to the Championship.
However, the former United player is now expected to return to former club Bradford City to fill the vacant managerial hot-seat at Valley Parade.
Meanwhile, the Blades will unveil former England captain and Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion manager Robson as the new Bramall Lane chief on Tuesday.
Robson will be assisted by Kidd after the pair worked together successfully at Manchester United in the early 1990s.
"It's disappointing that my five years here ended with relegation which was a great disappointment for us all, but that's football and things like that have a habit of happening," McCall told the club's official website.
"I was grateful to get chance to become assistant manager and it was great, in my first full season in that post, to contribute to promotion and then the Premiership campaign.
"Sheffield United fans have always been great to me and I thank them warmly for that."
