League One FTBpro PFA Fan Player of The Year: Harry Maguire - Sheffield United
Harry Maguire had to beat off some serious contenders to claim the title of PFA Fans’ Player of the Year in League One after what was a rollercoaster season with Sheffield United.
The Blades were looking down at the relegation zone rather than up at the play-offs before former Derby boss Nigel Clough’s arrival last October.
They may have fallen short of a top six spot but the progress United have made under Clough has been impressive, and Maguire has played a massive role in the club’s revival.
Harry has been a colossus at the back for the Blades, both in terms of stature and ability, and having already skippered the side he is being widely tipped as a permanent captain of the club.
He is also being tipped by many as a future England international, having already represented the Under 21s, and next season could be a defining one both for him and the club.
His aerial ability makes him a dominant force at the back and a danger in the opposition box where his goals have been vital as United fell just seven points short of a top six finish behind Peterborough United.
After such an impressive campaign, a number of clubs are said to be interested in Maguire with Wolves putting out feelers about a player who was also casually linked with Manchester United earlier in the season.
There is no doubt Maguire deserves to be playing at a higher level and, like most of his United teammates, has benefited from the management and coaching skills of Clough in the last six months. Training has improved, as have performances on the field, and Maguire is loving life under the new regime, with United favourite and former player and boss Chris Morgan also playing his part.
Maguire said. “Morgs is still a big influence in the dressing room. Basically it’s just the gaffer’s positive attitude. He’s given us belief and has shown great confidence in all of us. Every day I come into training knowing that I’m going to enjoy the session.”
Whether the 21-year-old, who has already clocked up more than 100 appearances for his hometown club, will be playing in red and white stripes next season remains to be seen as interest is hotting up.
Maguire has just a year left on his contract at Bramall Lane and Wolves, whilst not having made a formal bid as yet, have again made it known they are full of admiration for an England star in waiting.
