Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock has enticed Brian Kidd to join the coaching team at Bramall Lane.
Kidd, who was also wanted by new Sunderland manager Roy Keane, enjoyed a successful time as Sir Alex Ferguson's number two at Manchester United throughout the 1990s.
"Brian was always my number one choice and I'm delighted because he'll be worth his weight in gold," Warnock told the Sheffield Star.
"He brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge which means he'll get instant respect from the players. Brian's role will be to assist myself and Stuart (McCall).
"We want to be able to do a lot more individual coaching and this will allow us to do that because, since we went up, it's been difficult to find the time, there's so much going on.
"Brian had turned down plenty of other offers so we're pleased that he wanted to work with us.
"Having him on board is a real plus and people always welcome a fresh face and a different slant on things."
