Sheffield United are hopeful that striker Rob Hulse could recover from a double leg fracture to be fit for the start of next season.
The 27-year-old former Leeds United frontman suffered the injury in the 3-0 defeat at Chelsea two weeks ago and had been expected to be sidelined until nearly Christmas.
However, Blades boss Neil Warnock is upbeat about Hulse's recovery after promising early signs in his rehabilitation.
He told the club's official website: "Rob has been back in Sheffield to see the surgeon and he's been told that the injury has knitted well.
"The surgeon said that he could be okay for pre-season, which is a boost.
"Rob's had injuries before and he knows the challenges that lie ahead. He's moving over to Sheffield for his rehabilitation and he's got to put in the hard work now."
Hulse had scored eight goals for the Blades this season, following his £2.2million switch from Elland Road.
