Blunt Blades crash out of Carling Cup

Sheffield United surprisingly crashed out of the Carling Cup at the first round stage when they were beaten 2-0 by League One side Hartlepool United.

Pools took the lead after only six minutes when James Brown knocked home the rebound after Steve Simonsen had saved Joe Gamble's shot.

On the hour mark, Chris Turner's team doubled their advantage when Antony Sweeney was upended by Rob Kozluk and Adam Boyd sent Simonsen the wrong way from the penalty spot.

The Blades never looked like getting back in to the match and Hartlepool could easily have won by a wider margin with Gamble almost adding a third when he curled a 20-yard left-footed shot wide.
