Blades turn to Robson
22 May 2007 - 11:27:17
Sheffield United have confirmed Bryan Robson as their new manager after handing the former England captain a three-year contract.
Robson, 50, will be assisted at Bramall Lane by Brian Kidd with the pair appointed just nine days after the Blades were relegated from the Premier League and less than a week after former manager Neil Warnock decided to step down.
The former Manchester United midfielder has previously been in charge of Middlesbrough, Bradford City and West Bromwich Albion.
Robson left Albion last September and admitted he had been itching to get back into management.
"When you've been in football since you were 15 and you go out of the game, you do miss it. It's what I've always done," he said.
"The great thing about Sheffield United is the set-up. It's surprised me how solid the foundations are.
"That gives you a great chance to go forward and improve the squad and hopefully get straight back into the Premiership."
Meanwhile, United's plc chairman Kevin McCabe believes Robson is the right man to lead the Blades back into the top-flight after he won promotion to the Premier League with Middlesbrough in the late 1990s.
"Bryan is an experienced manager. We believe he's the right man to get us back to the Premiership in the shortest possible space of time," he said.
"He will have every support from the board and the team here to gain that ambition because this club intends to be among the top ten in the Premiership at least within the next three to five years."
