Blades snap up Gerrard
27 Sep 2006 - 11:19:45
Sheffield United have signed veteran goalkeeper Paul Gerrard on a short-term contract running until the New Year.
The 33-year-old, who spent time on loan with the Blades in 2003, had been without a club after leaving Nottingham Forest at the end of last season.
Gerrard told the club's official website: "My contract was up at Forest and they wanted to trim the squad and the wage bill.
"I had a couple of chats with Premiership and Championship clubs but nothing came of it, so I trained on my own and went to the gym to keep myself in good shape before Neil Warnock gave me a ring.
"He wanted me to come down and train and it suited both me and the club and I've signed until the January transfer window."
Gerrard started his career with Oldham Athletic, before joining Everton for £1million in the summer of 1996, however, his progress with the Toffees was hindered by a series of knee problems.
He moved to the City Ground in the summer of 2004 after a successful loan stint at the end of the previous season.
