Blades set to land Howard

Barnsley captain Brian Howard appears to be on the verge of signing for the Tykes' South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United.

Howard has been keen to leave Oakwell since the summer and is thought to be on his way to Bramall Lane in a loan deal before making the switch permanent in January.

Blades boss Kevin Blackwell told his club's official website: "We've agreed a deal with Barnsley and the player will shortly be having his medical.

"If that goes satisfactorily, he'll sign a three-month loan deal with an agreed deal at the end of that period.

"Brian brings goals. Every team needs extra fire-power and you certainly need that in this division.

"If the source of goals dries up in one area, you need it from another. There's been a lot of responsibility on Gary Speed at both ends of the pitch but Brian has a goal in him. He'll help us in that department."
