    Blades secure Stokes signing

    17 Oct 2008 - 11:23:46

Sheffield United has signed Republic of Ireland striker Anthony Stokes from Sunderland on a three-month loan.

The 20-year-old has struggled to make his mark with the Black Cats, netting five goals in 38 appearances, while he has made only three outings as a substitute this season.

Blades boss, Kevin Blackwell, told the club's official website: "He will give us more options on the left-hand side, especially as we have got a few injury niggles.

"He has also played in the hole and gives us great cover right across the frontline."

Sunderland manager Roy Keane had earlier told The Gazette: "It's one of those deals that we hope will benefit everyone involved - Sunderland, Sheffield United and Stokesy.

"But no-one more than Stokesy, because what he really needs at this stage is a run of first-team games.

"This move will give him a chance to maybe start games and start them in his preferred position, because I know Sheffield United have been struggling a bit with injuries."
