Blades ponder Kilgallon appeal
20 Oct 2008 - 14:24:07
Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell is wary of launching an appeal against Matthew Kilgallon's controversial dismissal in his side's Steel City derby defeat at Hillsborough.
The Blades defender was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Wednesday's Sean McAllister, a decision that astonished Blackwell.
However, the United manager is concerned that Kilgallon, who faces a three-match ban, could be handed a longer punishment if the FA think it is a "frivolous appeal".
Blackwell said: "Do we hope to appeal? Maybe. But I keep hearing the word 'frivolous' being used these days and there's a danger people get an extra game ban.
"That was a Steel City derby. It was a fanny's tackle. I wouldn't like to see (Mike) Dean referee one of the old derbies. It wasn't just the sending-off, there were other blatant fouls that went unpunished.
"If that's a sending-off then we may as well all pack up and go home. Brian Howard has an eye nearly hanging out of his socket.
"It seems you can maliciously wound somebody and get away with it. But if you have a go at referees, then you get fined."
