Sheffield United manager Bryan Robson has confirmed that he has held talks with James Beattie and hopes to agree a deal with the Everton striker before the start of the new season.
Robson said on Sunday that he hoped to land the former Southampton star in a £4million deal and the transfer now appear to have moved a step closer to completion.
"Negotiations have gone well with James and his advisors, so hopefully there will be something by the end of the week," Robson told the Blades' official website.
"I'm aware that there has been speculation about his wages being a stumbling block, particularly with the chairman being abroad at the moment."
However, Robson has decided not to offer a permanent contract to Newry City trialist Richard Clarke.
