Former England captain Bryan Robson has emerged as the surprise favourite to replace Neil Warnock as the new Sheffield United manager.
Robson is reported to have held talks with the Blades board on Thursday and will bring Brian Kidd to Bramall Lane as his number two if he gets the job.
He has previous managerial experience with Middlesbrough, Bradford City and West Brom.
United chairman Terry Robinson has revealed that he hopes to name the new manager next week.
He told the club's official website: "Those of us on the football side are doing the research and have submitted a shortlist to the Plc board.
"Broadly speaking we are looking at three lists, one containing the names of men with all the ideal qualities, another of up and coming younger managers, and then some from abroad to give us a wide choice of possibilities.
"We are working mainly from the first list and have had contact with some of the candidates on it. We will progress from there when we have enough information and confidence to take things to the next stage.
"The timeframe for appointing is really to get everything sorted out as soon as possible. Kevin McCabe is currently in the USA so we are doing the groundwork so that he can decide, possibly as early next week."
